Abstract

Predicting the Weather, Unravelling the Storm. The Tiemperos, between Climate and Healing in the Foothills of La Malinche

Based on ethnographic research carried out in Nahuatl-speaking communities in central-southern Mexico, this article sets out to investigate the figure of the tiempero, the ritual specialist of atmospheric weather. In this itinerary aimed at understanding the actions of “those who work with the weather”, it will be addressed the issues of their initiation, their practices and the continuity that exists between tiemperos and healers, between meteorological knowledge and healing knowledge. In the scenario in which these figures operate, the backdrop is the historical violence of religious conversion, together with that of the severe ecological crisis affecting the region.

A partire dalla ricerca etnografica condotta presso alcune comunità di lingua náhuatl nel Messico centromeridionale, l’articolo si propone di indagare la figura del tiempero, lo specialista rituale del tempo atmosferico. In questo itinerario volto alla comprensione dell’agire di “coloro che lavorano con il tempo”, verranno affrontati i temi della loro iniziazione, delle loro pratiche e della continuità che esiste fra tiempero e guaritore, fra sapere legato al clima e sapere di cura. Nello scenario in cui operano queste figure, fanno da sfondo la violenza storica della conversione religiosa, insieme a quella della severa crisi ecologica che colpisce la regione.
