Psychiatry, as a branch of medical knowledge, claimed and took upon itself curative and care practices in the mental hospitals in the immediacy of the war zone and then managed them in the wider network of mental hospitals behind the front and throughout Italy. But the official psychiatry of that historical moment was also strenuously committed to supporting the reasons for the war, including proposing the thesis that the psychotic crises were only revealing of previous hereditary defects, in the minds and bodies of the soldiers who were incurring them. A knowledge/ power aligned to bellicose reasons, anticipating racist arguments and pro-eugenics positions, manages in the ordinary daily life of the asylum far away from the front, lives of peo-ple who will remain marked by war, failing, in the vast majority of cases, to return even a minimum historical record. The individual truths of the massacre, silenced by the rhetoric regarding the Great War, re-emerge, if read and heard in the regime of their bureaucratic management, from the folders of the great asylum village, where the psychiatric patients of the war were hosted, those who, without being dead, would not return as heroes.
